In the wide world of Wellness, there are a number of products which promise to help you relax. From the huge arrival of CBD products, to bath bombs, supplements, powders, and topicals, there's a lot out there that all claim to do the same thing. I will be the first person to recommend a host of different things, but personally consider a high-quality Magnesium product the King of them all, for a number of different reasons.
Magnesium is an Essential Chemical-Element and Building Block for Body Processes
Magnesium is responsible for hundreds of chemical reactions in your body; over 600 in fact! From converting food to energy, forming proteins, maintaining your DNA, regulating the nervous system, and allowing your muscles to contract and release, Magnesium is a complete power house for the body and an essential part of functioning the way you're supposed to.
While CBD also does help the nervous system drop into deeper relaxation, balancing and restoring you to homeostasis - I still prefer and advocate for a healthy level of Mg for your nervous system to do what its supposed to. Put together, Mg & CBD are an excellent team for helping you deescalate from stress and straing.
In terms of physical pain relief, did you know that if your body lacks Magnesium muscles can not release? And unfortunately almost 50% of people are deficient. Things like excess coffee, caffeine, sugar, and stress can deplete your stores of magnesium.
A Personal Magnesium Success Story
Every massage therapist learns these basics in Anatomy & Physiology, but without a tangible experience its sometimes hard to realize just how necessary Mg's role is!
During massage school, my class learned about the differences between how Calcium and Magnesium effect the body. Calcium helps to stiffen and bind; and is often part of the process of inflammation that the body uses around injury to make sure we don't further hurt ourselves. Magnesium can then be seen on the opposite pole as helping the body to release, loosen, and let go. They share an inverse relationship, but at the same time Magnesium also helps the body absorb Calcium more efficeintly.
At the time I learned this, I was still healing from a knee injury that was responding to inflammation through poor food choices (did anyone else abuse coffee and bagels just to make it through school? I certainly did!) So I thought I would put this new knowledge it into practice and see just how much benefit I could get out of a big dose of Magnesium.
Because I believe in getting a lot of vitamins and minerals from whole food sources, on my lunch break I went straight to the French Broad Food Co-Op to find the highest source of Magnesium I could. A serving of Coconut can contain up to 30% RDA of Magnesium, so I ate about 4-5 servings of a coconut yoghurt to see what would happen.
To my surprise, the swelling in my knee reduced almost before my eyes, my pain subsided, and I found myself a lot more flexible than I was at the start of the day. (Additionally, I had come to find out why Magnesium is good for constipation as it can help loosen the muscles in and around the intestines, but I'll spare you the details.)
What happens if my body doesn't have Magnesium?
Here's a short list of how chronic Magnesium deficiency can effect you.
High Blood Pressure
The good news is, its easy to get on the right track.
If you're going to take supplements, make sure to get Chelated Magnesium and do some research on which brands have the highest Bioavailability.
Watch out for branded drinks like the Magnesium 'Natural Calm' products sold at Whole Foods, etc, as their form of Mg is not in its most absorbable state.
Our Magnesium Body Butter is made with high quality Ionic Trace Minerals from Omica Organics and the added bonus of Young Living's Essential Oil blend, 'Release.'
A great way to really deliver Magnesium to your body, is to combine both an external treatment with an internal treatment. So, as you take your Mg supplements you can at the same time take some relaxing baths in Magnesium Bath Flakes, or come and get a Massage and add our Magnesium Body Butter!
